You probably have a natural urge like I did to leave India and go “outside”, somewhere, anywhere. The first thing I would like to tell you is to atleast stay in India till you graduate from college. If you must leave, leave after that for your Masters or a job.

I say this because you don’t want to look back after many years and wonder why you left and maybe you should have stayed. You need to be able to look back and know with certainty that you should have left. There was no option for you but to leave.

If you are an Indian, you owe it to your country to atleast stay long enough to understand it. Don’t leave India so young that you never even knew it to begin with. There will be hard moments, and you may experience struggle — but it is all part of the Indian experience. Too many people have died for your freedom today for you not to do even that much for India.

Don’t be the obnoxious rich kid who left India after 12th because everyone else in their private, “upper class” school did the same. You won’t really be Indian if you do that. The last time somebody asked me this question (please tell them to let me leave), I told them to at-least stay in India till graduation and after that I myself will tell you to leave if…
