I notice many hiring managers tend to only consider resumes from their favorite schools, town, state, or country. After talking to some fresh grads & some very senior folk, this kind of behavior has become normalized. Just because everyone does it, does not mean it’s right. The precise time to do the right thing is when you see everyone else doing it wrong.
That is not a great way to hire & you are losing on many good candidates when you exhibit bias.
I suggest keeping an open mind and looking at every resume objectively.
Being objective is part of the scientific method. I’m not sure how come we don’t get the basics after going through a 4-year degree or master’s. This is not the latest in management studies — we have known it since before the time of Isaac Newton?
Engineering with Bias — is not Engineering & is not science, and hence will not yield the expected results.
For 99 hiring managers doing it the wrong way, there is at least 1 doing it the right way (for sure). And they are creating highly motivated teams because the people they hired know and appreciate that there was a level playing field and this manager was not biased.
A highly motivated employee is significantly more productive than others, who may get many jobs easily, because of whatever special status they got…
