I saw a job posting recently where #1 a company admitted that 75% of their code is in SQL. On the other side of the coin, I notice #2 a lot of job openings from healthcare companies that only want to hire people with compliance experience.
#1 is not a scalable system, no matter who or how many people they hire — because we are at the mature end of relational database technology. Even if they spend a lot of money or hire a lot of people, ultimately they will hit a dead end because nobody has unlimited funds except very big companies like Microsoft, Google & Amazon.
#2 Healthcare companies mistakenly assume that all software problems have been solved, so they only need people with compliance experience. I talked to two founders of a recently well-funded healthcare company who said something to the effect of: “Software can do anything. We just need people with healthcare compliance experience”
The problem is that most healthcare companies sit on a ton of data. Going with the assumption of #2, it is easy to see that almost all of them will end up with the #1 situation. Hmm… healthcare is broken!
