The easiest way to go from 20/5 mbps to 150/40 mbps Wifi speeds on Gigabit cable

So, I was working with a good friend a few weeks ago when I noticed the slower than normal download speeds in his office. I asked him to run an Ookla speed test and the results shocked me!

He was getting 20 mbps down, and 5 mbps upload speeds on a Comcast Business line where he was paying for 1 gbps down and 40 mbps upload.

He had a Comcast Business Gateway which combined a cable modem, router and Wifi — which he was using as the single Wifi device in his office which is a pretty big space. As everyone know, a gigabit business connection is actually not that cheap unless you are on some sort of temporary promotion.

He is not tech savvy, and he does not have IT people (not a software shop). And I could feel his frustration at paying all that money and not getting anything out of it.

I decided to take matters into my own hands.

If you have read my Xfinity Gigabit Internet Odyssey, you know I have a Double NAT problem grand fathered into my network. I have this problem because I started with an Airport Extreme Mesh network, and as it grew older, I migrated to Google Wifi and later to Nest Wifi. On the way, all the old routers remained, with the older Wifi points in bridge mode, used for IoT devices, and the newer ones being the main system.

The problem with my Wifi now with Unifi routers and switches is that Nest Wifi cannot do Mesh in bridge mode, so I had a great Wifi system suited for Home use and easy to use and manage, but which does not play well with the other networking gear I had.

I needed to sell off all my Nest & Google Wifi routers and points, preferably all of them together to someone who needed all of them, and migrate to Unifi Wifi 6 Mesh systems (in EA currently — but I am watching the availability).

On a side note last week, Comcast upgraded my 2gbps symmetric fiber connection to 3 gbps “seamlessly”. It just happened and I got an email about it. Talk about the magic of competition!
