I want to save your time & probably your money. Dolby Atmos on Apple Music has been driving me insane for the past few months, and I want to write about what I’ve learned about it so far. As usual, nobody really quite talks about the meat of the matter, and I find a lot of click bait videos and articles about the subject.

Let me be clear — this is not about “pseudo” Dolby Atmos, because there is such a thing. I call it pseudo because headphones & ear buds or the teeny speakers in a tablet or phone cannot really playback Dolby Atmos, or even Dolby Digital surround sound for that matter.

This is about people like me who hear the words Dolby Atmos and think of a 5.1.4 or 5.1.2 real Dolby Atmos setup.

Does Apple Music really support Dolby Atmos? And if so, from which devices?

I have two home theater setups — one in the living room for movies, which has an Apple TV 4K, and another in my home office for my critical listening setup. Both are 5.1.4, both have a Denon 125W AV Receiver which supports real Dolby Atmos, and as you can imagine, both have true height channels & not the bouncing sound virtual height channels.
