Will a 10gbps home network make any difference to the vast majority of users?
I wanted to write a quick article on whether a home network with a 10gbps backbone will make any difference to a regular, non tech savvy user who does not have any special requirement like transferring huge files over the home network for work purposes, etc.
A typical user would watch streaming online, listen to music, browse websites, etc. Also, it would be highly unusual to have devices with a 10gbps card. Most devices would either be 1gbps or even 100mbps (like Sonos!).
This is why in my articles I have noted that you only need a 10gbps backbone to all your switches, and most of your ports would be 1gbps. Anything else is overkill.
The most extended scenario I can think of could be like mine where one PC has a 10gbps card for specialized work, and maybe some people opted for the new Mac Mini with the 10gbps option to be able to use it for music streaming.
The other scenario could be that your backup device/ NAS is connected to the network over a 10gbps link, so your backups complete faster from multiple PCs. So, in the worst case scenario you may have one or maybe two devices which really have or need a 10gbps port.
